Duel: Arena 1 — Mike Perry vs Brandon Jenkins

Most bookmakers buy a logo spot on the canvas and call it marketing. Duel skipped that step and built the whole promotion. Duel: Arena is a brand-new combat sports outfit, and Duel: Arena 1 on August 29 was its first event ever — no test shows, no regional circuit warm-up, straight into a 15,000-seat NBA arena with a main event people argued about for weeks.

Matchmaking was handled by Dean Toole, and that hire mattered more than it looked. A veteran matchmaker is the difference between a promotion that can actually book fighters and one that announces a headline act, then spends six weeks quietly failing to fill the undercard. Toole put former UFC fighters on the card alongside influencer bouts, with names dropping right up to fight week.

One night. Three rulesets. One ring. Nobody's pretending this is a sanctioned title eliminator — it's a show, and it's built to be watched.

That's the part that actually stands out. Instead of committing to one ruleset, Duel: Arena 1 is a hybrid card — MMA, boxing and kickboxing sharing the same night. And every bout, the MMA fights included, happens in a ring rather than a cage.

This isn't set dressing. In a cage the fence is a weapon — you pin a man against it, you wall-walk your way back up off it, you cut the whole floor in half with it. A ring gives you none of that. It gives you ropes you can spill through and corners you can get trapped in, and referees who have to reset fighters far more often than they'd like.

The practical effect: ring MMA rewards strikers and punishes anyone whose game plan depends on grinding a man into the fence. Read that sentence again, then look at the main event — and note that it changed this week. Against Dillon Danis, the original opponent, this pointed one way and one way only: Danis was the grappler, Perry the man who wanted to stand and swing, and the ropes were quietly handing Perry the fight. Brandon Jenkins is not a grappler. He is a striker with ten knockouts, so the same logic now points at a firefight rather than a chess match — which is the thing worth thinking hardest about if you're putting money on it.

Dillon Danis is out. He withdrew injured on Thursday 27 August, two days before the card, and Mike Perry announced it himself at the press conference. Danis has since posted footage of the injury. It is the second time he has come out of a marquee booking — he also pulled out of a KSI boxing match in January 2023.

Stepping in on roughly 48 hours' notice is Brandon Jenkins, a 31-year-old former UFC lightweight out of Syndicate MMA in Las Vegas. He is 17–11 with ten knockouts, has also fought professional kickboxing (9–4), boxing (1–0), Karate Combat and bare-knuckle MMA, and beat Chris Avila by split decision in May. He was in Nevada when the call came and travelled to Orlando to make the weigh-in. The bout is now a catchweight, because a lightweight cannot safely make a welterweight camp in two days — or the reverse.

The swap takes away the one thing that could have ended Perry's night in a second, and replaces it with a man who will stand in front of him and swing back.

Mike Perry shows up at 15–8, and that record lies about where he actually is. The UFC let him go; bare-knuckle boxing made him a star. He became the biggest draw BKFC has ever had by walking through people who were supposed to beat him, and his last outing ended with Nate Diaz's corner throwing in the towel in round two. He doesn't do dull fights. He's never learned how.

Dillon Danis is unbeaten in MMA — and hasn't set foot in an MMA bout since June 2019, when he armbarred Max Humphrey at Bellator 222. Everything he's done since — the DQ loss to Logan Paul in 2023, the feuds, the timeline — has been performance. The grappling credentials are real and elite; the question nobody can answer is what seven years away does to a man once someone is legally allowed to punch him in the face again.

A pressure fighter who never stops coming, against a world-class grappler who hasn't had to prove it since 2019. That's the whole fight.

The build-up was loud, because both of them are very good at this part. The announcement alone got torn apart by chunks of the MMA industry as a circus act — while other fighters publicly begged for a slot on the same card. Derision from the purists and demand from the roster: historically, that's exactly the reaction a debut promotion wants.

Eleven bouts were announced across three rulesets, all in a ring, and it took until fight week to get there — the main event changed two days out. Ten of them were contested and recorded by the Florida Athletic Commission; the exhibition between the founder and Patrick Holden was not contested at all, and a twelfth bout took place that appears on no sheet.

Update, 28 August — weigh-in done. Perry 182.0 lb, Jenkins 185.8 lb — the short-notice replacement is the heavier man. In the co-feature, Gypsy Crusader 218.0 lb against Azoulay 185.2 lb, a gap of 32.8 lb. The promotion has not yet published the rest of the card.

Update, 28 August — the main event changed. Dillon Danis withdrew injured two days out. Brandon Jenkins, a former UFC lightweight, took the fight on roughly 48 hours' notice, and it is now a catchweight. Update, 20 August — two changes. Rashad Coulter is off the card: Jimi Manuwa now boxes Chase Sherman, the man who stopped Coulter at UFC 211, which makes the comeback a considerably harder night. And a featherweight MMA bout has been added — Blake Anthony vs Nate Morrow, an undefeated prospect against a submission specialist.

The promotion published the fight-week running order on 24 August. Everything before Saturday happens at the Marriott Downtown Orlando rather than the arena, and the open events are streamed free on YouTube and Facebook.

One detail a lot of people got wrong, us included: Saturday was not a 6:00 PM start. Doors opened at 6:00 PM ET and the first fight was at 7:00 PM ET — the 6:00 PM figure everyone was quoting was the door time.

The free streams were the genuinely useful part of the week. The weigh-ins and the press conference cost nothing and ran on the promotion's own YouTube and Facebook channels; only Saturday's fights sat behind the $29.99 paywall. The Thursday press conference turned out to be the week's most-shared footage, for reasons nobody planned.

The card was pay-per-view, priced at $29.99, ordered through DuelArena.tv and streamed worldwide via PlayLive. There was no broadcaster or television deal, and no legal free feed on the night — anything advertising one was farming clicks.

Duel: Arena 1 took place at the Kia Center, 400 W Church St, Orlando, FL 32801 — the downtown arena that hosts the Orlando Magic, capacity around 15,000 for a fight configuration. It sits right in the middle of the Church Street entertainment district, which means bars and food within a two-minute walk and parking that fills up early on event nights.

Flying in? Orlando International (MCO) is about 20 minutes out by car, and the arena is roughly 25 minutes from the Disney/Universal resort corridor — worth knowing if you're building a weekend around the card rather than just a night.

The obvious question for anyone landing here from a sportsbook angle: can you bet on Duel: Arena at Duel? The Duel sportsbook covers MMA and combat sports among its 48 sports, with both pre-match and in-play markets, so an event promoted by the brand itself is a safe bet to be on the board. Duel has been circling this for a while — collaborations with media-facing fighters, stunts around big sporting events, the kind of marketing that gets clipped and reposted. Arena is that strategy with the training wheels off. The upside for fans is real: a card with actual names on it, in an actual arena. The thing to keep your head about is equally real — a promotion owned by a gambling operator exists, in part, to walk you toward an account. We'd rather say that out loud than dress it up. Worth knowing what that casino actually is, because the two halves overlap more than you would expect. Duel’s flagship product is a live blackjack table run as a variety show — Mike Tyson, Lil Pump and a string of others have dealt on it, and the promotion has spent roughly $5 million on those bookings. Clavicular, who refereed the unsanctioned bout that closed this card, is under contract to that table. Daniel Cao, one of its dealers, boxed a man in a SpongeBob costume on the same night.
